Mainstreet Cleveland Announces Pet Friendly Downtown

Downtown Cleveland has been officially accepted in the Mars Petcare BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ movement to make it an even happier, healthier and more welcoming place for pets. As part of the program 40 downtown businesses are welcoming pets making it easier for pets and their owners to share experiences and time together.

Mainstreet Cleveland will officially kick off its participation in the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ initiative with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, October 25, 1 p.m. at First Street Square.

“The Mars Petcare Pets Welcome program will benefit businesses, pet owners and pets. Businesses that allow pets inside will have signage on their doors indicating whether pets are welcome inside or pets are welcome on the patios or sidewalk dining for restaurants,” said Sharon Marr, Mainstreet Cleveland executive director.

Downtown’s pet friendly movement is one more on the list of pet friendly amenities available in Cleveland, including small and large dog parks at Tinsley Park, over 9 miles of greenway, pet-friendly hotels, doggie daycares, shelters, and much more.

“The BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ movement aligns closely with our focus on being the City with Spirit” for all – which includes our pets,” said Mayor Kevin Brooks. “We used the BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ program’s criteria to look at the resources available to pets and their owners, and we found that we’re already an incredibly supportive community for pets, but we’re aiming to do even more.” A second dog park is coming in early 2019 in the Blythe-Bower Park.

Pets are good for business.  People with pets are more likely to visit pet-friendly businesses, and to stay longer during their visit. The program was initially developed and piloted in Franklin, Tennessee and has been proven successful over the past year.
